At Disability Justice, we monitor jails, prisons, juvenile facilities, psychiatric hospitals, nursing homes, group homes — anywhere that someone with a disability might be mistreated. We investigate abuse and neglect. And we help Coloradans obtain reasonable accommodations and access services.

Breaking Point

In a March 2026 report, Disability Justice found the state’s Division of Youth Services (DYS) at a “breaking point.” The four-year study describes an agency strained by shrinking staff, growing violence, and a shortage of alternatives.

Unsafe and Unheard

In an October 2025 report, Disability Justice documented dangerous conditions at Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center in Cañon City, one of only a handful of psychiatric residential treatment facilities in Colorado. The conclusion: Instead of providing consistent care and support, Southern Peaks has left many children desperate to escape.
